Introduction

Located in the heart of Rhodes, Hippocrates Square transcends being merely a landmark; it serves as a gateway to the past, providing a peek into the intricate tapestry of history that envelops this captivating Greek island.

Bearing the name of the famed father of medicine, Hippocrates, the square stands tall as a tribute to the island’s vibrant history and its enduring importance across generations.

Surrounding the square are remnants of the bygone era, from the imposing Castle of the Knights that looms nearby to the intricate mosaics that adorn the area, each piece weaving together the narrative of a civilisation that has thrived through millennia.

It’s not just the architecture or the historical significance that captivates visitors, but the lively atmosphere brimming with local artisans, quaint cafes, and the murmurs of the past that echo around every corner.

The Square’s Significance Through the Ages

The historical significance of Hippocrates Square is multi-faceted, reflecting the myriad phases of Rhodes’ storied past. Throughout the ages, it has stood as a central hub for commerce, politics, and social gatherings.

In the Middle Ages, it became an epicentre of Knights Hospitaller activity, who utilised the square as a strategic point for defence and administration, epitomising their influence on the island’s architectural and cultural landscape.

In subsequent centuries, the square has continued to evolve, yet its essence as a melting pot of cultures and traditions remains unchanged.

During the Turkish Occupation it was called as “Sintrivan Tzami”.

Today, it embodies the resilience and the cultural synthesis that characterise Rhodes, making it not only a focal point for tourists but a testament to the island’s ability to blend its historical legacy with modernity.

Restoration and Preservation

Following the devastating fire of 1924, Rhodes, under Italian governance, faced the monumental task of reviving its central square and adjacent streets. The restoration, spearheaded by the Governor of the Dodecanese, was approached with an intention not only to repair but to reimagine.

The comprehensive reconstruction effort initiated by the Italian authorities focused on harmonising the medieval, Ottoman, and Italian influences that pervade the island’s culture.

Lead architect Armando Bernabiti played a pivotal role in this process, revising the original designs to ensure the square would reflect the rich tapestry of periods it has witnessed. During the Italian occupation the Sqaure was called “Piazza del Fuoco”.

In the heart of the redesigned square, Bernabiti introduced a fountain that became a symbol of the square’s resurgence. This fountain, with elements from both Ottoman and Byzantine architectural traditions, serves as a centrepiece that seamlessly blends the various historical influences of Rhodes.

The restoration and preservation work undertaken in the wake of the fire have allowed Hippocrates Square to emerge as a larger-than-life testament to Rhodes’ ability to revitalise its heritage.

The Mythical Birthplace of Colossus

In the annals of ancient wonders, the Colossus of Rhodes holds a special place, not just for its towering presence but also for the lore surrounding its origin.

Positioned at the entrance of Mandraki Harbour, this colossal statue is believed to have been a symbol of unity and freedom, erected to celebrate Rhodes’ victory over the invading forces of Demetrius in 305 B.C.

Though no physical evidence of the Colossus remains today, historians and archaeologists speculate that its base once graced the harbour, serving as a beacon to the ancient world.

This magnificent statue, purported to be the work of the sculptor Chares of Lindos, stood approximately 33 meters high, akin to the modern Statue of Liberty from base to torch.

Its existence was tragically cut short by an earthquake in 226 B.C., yet the Colossus of Rhodes continues to beguile the world, embodying the grandeur and ingenuity of ancient Greek civilisation.

Protecting the Grand Masters’ Fleet

In the intriguing narrative of Mandraki district, a chapter of paramount importance is dedicated to its role in safeguarding the Grand Masters’ Fleet.

During the era when the Knights of Saint John held dominion over Rhodes, from 1309 to 1522, Mandraki district was more than just a naval base; it was a formidable fortress protecting the heart of the Knights’ maritime prowess.

Ingenious engineering and strategic design transformed the harbour into a sanctuary where the fleet could dock safely, shielded from the tempestuous whims of nature and the looming threats of adversaries.

Renowned for their architectural acumen, the Knights implemented a series of defensive structures around the harbour, including massive chains across its entrance to prevent unauthorized access.

These chains, which could be lowered or raised as needed, served as a physical barrier, deterring enemy ships from breaching the harbour’s sanctity.

This defensive mechanism underscores the Knights’ dedication to the preservation of their naval assets and exemplifies the strategic importance of Mandraki district in the broader tapestry of medieval military history.

A distinctive silhouette against the Rhodes skyline, the Goths, a people famed for their artistry in the realm of architecture, inspiring awe and wonder across generations. Amongst their enduring legacies, the windmills of the harbour of Mandraki district stand as a testament to the ingenuity and aesthetic sensibility of medieval times.

Once pivotal in grinding grain to sustain the Knights and the local populace, these windmills today serve as enchanting relics of the past, drawing visitors from around the globe.

Skillfully constructed to harness the power of the wind, their design is not only functional but also a representation of Gothic architectural elegance seamlessly integrated into the coastal landscape.

These windmills, set against the backdrop of azure seas, evoke a sense of timelessness and connectivity to the historical narrative of Rhodes.

An Architectural Chronicle

At the intersection of ancient and modern, the walls of the harbour tell a layered tale of architectural prowess and adaptation. Throughout the centuries, different civilizations have left their marks, turning the harbour into an open-air museum of maritime architecture.

The Italian Influence

The architectural evolution of Mandraki Harbour district underwent a remarkable transformation during the Italian occupation of Rhodes from 1912 to 1943.

This period is marked by the introduction of Art Deco and Rationalist architectural styles, reflecting the ethos of Italian governance and aesthetic sensibilities of the era.

Italian architects, inspired by a vision of grandeur and modernity, embarked on an ambitious urban planning project that significantly altered the landscape of the harbour and the surrounding city.

Emblematic of this influence are the buildings lining the harbour’s edge, which exhibit a distinct blend of local tradition and Italian architectural innovation.

The New Market (Nea Agora), with its imposing facade and intricate motifs, stands as a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail characterising this period.

Moreover, the renovation of the Palace of the Grand Master by the Italians infused the medieval castle with a blend of Gothic and Renaissance elements, creating a unique historical narrative that spans centuries.

The Ottoman Influence

Beyond the dominant influences of Gothic architecture and Italian aesthetics, Mandraki Harbour’s architectural narrative encompasses a broader tapestry of styles, reflecting the diverse epochs and rulers who have left their mark on this historic site.

The Byzantine era, prevalent before the Knights’ reign, contributed modest yet significant architectural elements, particularly in the form of religious edifices and fortifications, which embedded a layer of spiritual and defensive significance to the harbour’s landscape.

Similarly, the Ottoman occupation introduced Islamic architectural motifs, especially in public buildings and baths, infusing a blend of Eastern characteristics that complemented the existing medieval and Renaissance features.

This melange of styles has created a unique architectural harmony, embodying the multicultural heritage of Rhodes.

Mandraki District & Mandraki Harbour Today

In the contemporary era, Mandraki Harbour stands as a vibrant testament to its rich historical tapestry, blending its illustrious past with modern-day advancements.

Today, the harbour serves not only as a marina for yachts and pleasure boats but also as a point of convergence where history, culture, and leisure intertwine.

Visitors and locals alike are drawn to its bustling waterfront, which hosts a variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants, offering a taste of Greek hospitality against the backdrop of architectural marvels from bygone eras.

The preservation efforts in Mandraki Harbour have been paramount, ensuring that its historical integrity remains intact while accommodating the necessities of modern infrastructure.

Educational tours and informational plaques strategically placed around the harbour provide insights into its history, allowing tourists to immerse themselves in a bygone era as they tread its docks.

The Tale of Three Rhodian Windmills

The three windmills facing the harbor serve as a stoic reminder of both Rhodes’ agrarian past and maritime power. These Rhodian landmarks have transformed from purveyors of sustenance to symbols of resilience and timelessness.

The Era of Flour and Grain

On the east mole of Mandraki district in Rhodes, the three most renowned windmills stand, embodying centuries of history beside the formidable St. Nicolas Fortress.

These structures, alongside recent archaeological findings of five additional mills’ foundations on the rocks, offer profound insights into the economic and architectural evolution of Rhodes Town.

Historical records, including early maps and a 1486 woodcut, detail some 18 stone tower mills encircling the harbour—primarily used for grinding corn for export—though most have since succumbed to time.

Characterised by a single pair of overdriven millstones and a cylindrical stone tower with a distinctive rotating timber cap, these mills were initially constructed by Genoese prisoners, possibly even before Diedoné de Gozon, the Grand Master, fortified the port in the 14th century.

The first documentary mention of these windmills traces back to observations by a traveller from Frankfurt between 1350-1370. Continuing until 1519, several European explorers noted their presence, describing the mills as resembling fortified towers with six sails.

Following the port’s fortification under Grand Master Diedoné de Gozo in the 14th century and later by Grand Master Jean de Lastic (1437-1454), the mills were ingeniously integrated into the city’s defensive walls, serving dual functions as windmills and fortification towers.

Their round-the-clock operation underscores the vital role they played within the economy and productive framework of Rhodes.

Conclusion

The genesis of Marasia district of Rhodes is intrinsically linked to a period of profound sociopolitical upheaval. In the 16th century, following the Ottoman conquest, the Greek inhabitants of Rhodes faced a mandate that reshaped their living dynamics completely.

They were compelled to relocate outside the fortified walls of the Old City—a space that the occupiers reserved exclusively for military and administrative purposes.

This directive set the stage for the establishment of Marasia district, marking the beginning of an era that juxtaposed displacement with the unyielding spirit of a community determined to thrive under adverse circumstances.

The resulting settlement did not only become a new home for the displaced populations but also a beacon of Greek resilience and cultural preservation.

This district, with its unique blend of Greek and Ottoman influences, became a melting pot of cultures, fostering an environment where diversity was not just accepted but celebrated.

The architecture of Marasia district of Rhodes stands as a testament to this blend, where traditional Greek homes sit alongside Ottoman-style buildings.

Over centuries, the inhabitants of Marasia adeptly navigated the challenges of their time, contributing to a resilient infrastructure that supported not only their physical needs but also their immense cultural wealth.

The evolution of Marasia district serves as a compelling study in the power of community and the enduring strength of cultural identity amidst changing political landscapes.

As one traverses the winding streets, the harmonious blend of distinct architectural styles narrates the storied past of resilience and cultural syncretism.

Here, the traditional Rhodian houses, with their high walls and inner courtyards, represent the essence of Greek domestic architecture, offering a glimpse into the lifestyle preserved throughout centuries.

Alongside, the presence of Ottoman constructions, characterized by their ornate facades and intricate designs, adds layers of complexity to the district’s architectural narrative.

This diverse architectural heritage not only highlights the adaptability and creativity of the Marasians but also stands as a living museum, displaying the rich tapestry of human experiences and interactions that have shaped this remarkable area over time.

Introduction

Woven into the fabric of the Mediterranean, the New Town District of Rhodes stands as a testament to history’s unfurling at the crossroads of civilization. Unlike many contemporary ‘new’ towns, borne of modern planning and architecture, this enclave is a jewel in the crown of an island steeped in ancient lore.

Juxtaposed against the audacious and storied Old Town of Rhodes, the narrative of the New Town District is one of preservation, commerce, and resilience through the centuries.

A New Town District Steeped in Legacy

The establishment of the New Town district of Rhodes heralds back to the 20th century, marking a period of strategic urban expansion. In the aftermath of World War II, the local government sought to transform the island, allowing cosmopolitan influences to permeate its cultural and economic foundations.

This deliberate evolution created a natural synergy between the historic past and the burgeoning present, harmonizing antiquity with contemporary aspirations.

The architectural landscape of the New Town district of Rhodes is a harmonious blend of medieval elements seamlessly integrated with the clean, straight lines of modernist architecture.

Placed on the northeastern tip of Rhodes island, the Old Town District of Rhodes is strategically positioned, offering a gateway between the historic Aegean Sea and the vast stretches of the Mediterranean.

This location not only provided historical strategic advantage but also facilitated the rich cultural and economic exchanges that have shaped the town’s unique character over centuries.

Surrounded by a robust fortification system, the Old Town District is divided into two distinct sections: the Knight’s Quarter in the north, where the knights and elite lived, and the Hora, a section to the south filled with vibrant markets, shops, and residences reflecting the diverse cultures that thrived here.

This geographical and cultural dichotomy within the Old Town’s walls adds to its enchantment, making it a focal point for scholars, history enthusiasts, and travellers alike.

A Glimpse Into the Past

The construction of the Old Town of Rhodes commenced in 407 BC, under the guidance of the celebrated architect Hippodamus of Miletus, who is often hailed as the father of urban planning.

Originally engineered to serve both as a formidable fortress and a flourishing port, its strategic position was crucial in controlling the sea routes between Europe and the East.

Over the centuries, this architectural marvel has been shaped by various conquerors, including the Knights of Saint John during the 14th century, whose influence introduced the Gothic architecture that interlaces the town’s Hellenistic and Byzantine elements.

The primary purpose of these extensive fortifications was to safeguard the inhabitants and the treasures of Rhodes from the relentless sieges it faced through its storied past.

Wars and Reconstructions

Throughout its storied history, the Old Town of Rhodes has witnessed numerous sieges, conflicts, and reconstructions that have shaped its present-day appearance.

The most notable siege occurred in 1522, when the town fell to the forces of Suleiman the Magnificent after a relentless six-month siege, marking the end of the Knights’ rule and the beginning of Ottoman governance.

This period introduced a synthesis of gothic and Ottoman architectural styles, evident in many of its edifices and mosques built atop the ruins of churches. The advent of Italian rule in the early 20th century heralded another significant phase in the conservation and restoration of this medieval town.

The Italians undertook extensive archaeological excavations and restoration projects, seeking to preserve the essence of the knights’ legacy while integrating elements of the Renaissance and baroque styles.

These efforts were crucial in maintaining the architectural integrity and historical significance of the Old Town District, even incorporating modern amenities and infrastructure improvements to support its living heritage.

The resilience of Rhodes’ Old Town is not merely a reflection of its stone walls and fortifications but also of its ability to adapt and evolve through centuries of change.

Now, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stands as a beacon of cultural preservation, embodying the layered histories and heritages that have passed through its gates.

The Old Town’s architecture is a patchwork of influences—namely the Hellenistic, Frankish, and Ottoman. Its buildings, monuments, and castles have borne witness to the rise and fall of empires, each epoch leaving its unique imprint on the cityscape.

Gothic and Renaissance in the Aegean

The architectural landscape of the Old Town District of Rhodes intricately embodies the confluence of Gothic and Renaissance styles, nestled within the heart of the Aegean.

The Gothic influence, primarily courtesy of the Knights of Saint John, is vivid in the formidable grandiosity of the town’s fortifications and the pointed arches that grace the narrow streets.

In contrast, the Renaissance period under the Italian rule brought about a revival and enhancement in the architectural elegance, blending seamlessly with the town’s medieval essence.

This period witnessed the integration of classical motifs and the harmonious balance of proportions, evidencing a sophisticated understanding of architectural aesthetics that complements its Gothic predecessors.

One cannot dismiss the strategic embellishments and structural adaptations that characterise this era. The Street of the Knights, arguably the most preserved medieval street in Europe, stands as a testament to this mélange, with its cobblestoned alley flanked by inns that once housed knights by nationality.

The Palace of the Grand Master, resurrected during the Italian occupation, is an exemplar of this stylistic amalgamation, encapsulating the grandeur of a Gothic fortress with Renaissance finesse.

Ottoman Influences in the Old Town of Rhodes

The Ottoman Empire’s conquest of Rhodes in 1522 ushered in a new architectural era for the Old Town District, intertwining its established medieval charisma with distinctive Ottoman features.

This fusion is marked by the perforation of minarets into the skyline, the repurposing of sacred sites, and the introduction of baths and markets that underscored the social and cultural shifts of the period.

Notably, the Suleiman Mosque stands as a hallmark of Ottoman architecture within the town—constructed to commemorate Suleiman the Magnificent’s victory, it blends seamlessly with the historical fabric of the Old Town District, whilst asserting its own identity with its imposing dome and minaret.

Additionally, the influence of Ottoman architecture is observed in the adaptation of public spaces, such as the transformation of existing churches into mosques, including the Mosque of Aga and the Ibrahim Pasha Mosque.

These conversions were accompanied by the creation of intricate water fountains and baths, notably the Mustafa Pasha Bath, which to this day reflects the Ottomans’ sophisticated approach to communal health and hygiene.

The Old Town’s residential architecture also underwent a transformation, integrating features typical of Ottoman civic design.

A Cultural Mosaic

The Old Town of Rhodes, beyond its architectural grandeur, stands as a testament to the cultural interplay and synthesis of civilizations that have marked its history. A city embedded with deep historical roots, it unfolds a rich narrative of cultural exchange, visible in its traditions, cuisine, and daily life.

The amalgamation of Hellenistic, Byzantine, and modern influences shape its unique socio-cultural landscape, offering a multifaceted experience to its inhabitants and visitors alike.

Culinary traditions within the Old Town mirror this cultural fusion, presenting a palette that incorporates Greek, Turkish, and Italian recipes passed down through generations, blending to form distinctive flavours that narrate the island’s past.

Similarly, the various festivals and events celebrated in Rhodes echo the confluence of cultures, where Christian, Muslim, and secular traditions coexist, adding vibrancy to its social fabric.

The Acropolis’ hallowed grounds command reverence, not merely for their antiquity but for the ideals they espouse. They stand as a reminder of the island’s intellectual and spiritual legacy — a cultural capital that bequeathed wisdom as precious as the surrounding sea’s riches.

Uncovering Marasia:

Marasia, a district born out of necessity during the Ottoman occupation, is a testament to Greek ingenuity. Expelled from the protective confines of the medieval walls, the erstwhile residents forged a new community with an abiding spirit.

The architecture, a blend of neoclassical and traditional elements, houses bustling squares and inviting tavernas.

The soulful melodies of rebetiko, the music born of urban strife and rural lament, find a home in Marasia’s bohemian locales. It’s a district of dichotomy, where the echoes of the past harmonize with the beat of a contemporary, creative pulse. Marasia is more than a district; it’s a living patchwork of historical endurance and cultural vitality.
