The history of festivals in Rhodes is as rich and layered as the island’s ancient ruins. To understand the soul of Rhodes’ festivals, one must look back at its storied past, where mythology intertwines with history, and ancient rites give birth to today’s traditions.

The island, with a history that stretches back to the Neolithic period, was once a pivotal crossroads of cultures – a melting pot of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman influences, each leaving an indelible mark on the local customs and festivals.

Centuries ago, the festivals in Rhodes were deeply woven into the fabric of daily life, serving not only as a means for divine appeasement but also as vital community gatherings.

These were times when the entire populace, from the mightiest knights of the Order of Saint John to the simplest village folk, would come together, blurring social lines in collective celebration. Celebrations like the Medieval Rose Festival have their roots in this rich tapestry, encapsulating the chivalry, romance, and gallantry of the bygone eras.

In a nod to its ancient Greek heritage, Rhodes also celebrates the Anthesteria, a festival dedicated to wine and the joy it brings, echoing the Dionysian celebrations of antiquity.

This beautiful blending of past and present in festivals in Rhodes serves as a reminder of the island’s capacity to preserve its heritage while welcoming the new, creating a living history that both residents and travelers can partake in.

Introduction

Situated on the breathtaking island of Rhodes, a jewel among Greece’s renowned landmarks, the Acropolis of Rhodes serves as a magnificent tribute to the island’s storied past and illustrious cultural heritage.

Those drawn to the allure of ancient ruins and Hellenistic grandeur can find an illuminating adventure atop this hill, overlooking the azure expanse of the Aegean Sea. Imposing and serene, these ruins have stories etched in each stone, waiting for the intrepid explorer to unearth.

A Chronological Captivation in Stone

The Acropolis of Rhodes stands as a testament to the ancient city of Rhodes, dating back to the 5th century BC and situated merely 3 kilometers southwest from the heart of the modern city.

Perched on Monte Smith, it offers panoramic views over the island’s west coast, comprising key archaeological remnants significant to its historic fabric, including the Temples of Athena Polias and Zeus Polieus, and the Temple of Apollo. Notably, this site diverges from typical acropoleis by foregoing the construction of a fortified citadel.

History reveals that in 408 BC, amidst the waning years of the Peloponnesian War, the unification of the island’s three cities, Lindos, Kameiros, and Ialysos, birthed a synoecism, thus establishing a new capital in the Ialysia region.

It’s believed that the urban plan was designed by Hippodamos of Miletus, adopting a grid layout that contrasted the dense urban sprawl below with its more open, terraced green spaces, as per Aelius Aristides. The acropolis served as a sanctuary during the 316 BC flash flood, offering refuge from the waterlogged city center.

The architectural landscape of the acropolis also shifted following the Siege of Rhodes in 305-304 BC, as citizens dismantled certain structures to hastily erect defensive walls, a decision sparked by a vow to reconstruct grander edifices post-siege.

Further transformations ensued after the 228 BC earthquake, with renewal efforts supported generously by the wider Greek community, signifying the acropolis’ zenith in Rhodes’ political and economic narrative until 167 BC when Delos emerged as a free trade haven.

Post-World War II, the Greek Archaeological Service resumed the excavation and restoration tasks initiated by the Italian School of Archaeology at Athens from 1912 to 1945.

This painstaking work has rejuvenated the Temple of Pythian Apollo and continues within the encompassing Acropolis Archaeological Park, safeguarding 12,500 square meters from modern development. Despite the limited excavated area, the potential for further discovery beckons.

Landscaping and architecture harmonize across the Acropolis, with monuments from the Hellenistic period gracefully tiered on stepped terraces, flanked by robust retaining walls.

Each component of the Acropolis of Rhodes showcases the ingenuity and spirit of Hellenistic architecture, reflecting a blend of functionality and artistry that has endured through the ages. Key elements of this historic site include:

The Temple of Athena Polias and Zeus Polieus: Serving as a centerpiece for worship, this dual-deity temple underscores the religious significance of the Acropolis. Dedicated to Athena Polias, the goddess of the city, and Zeus Polieus, protector of the polis, its ruins hint at a once imposing structure integral to the spiritual life on the island.

The Temple of Apollo: This Doric temple, dedicated to the god of music, healing, and the sun, crowns the highest platform of the acropolis. Though only a few columns have been re-erected, they stand as beacons of the acropolis’ former glory, offering insights into the architectural ambition and precision of ancient builders.

The Stadium: Lying to the east of the main temple area, the stadium is a testament to the ancient Greeks’ love for athletics and competition. It played host to track and field events, with its U-shaped track and tiered seating areas carved directly from the rock.

The Odeon: The small marble theater, or Odeon, provided a venue for musical performances and public gatherings. Its intimate setting contrasts with the grandeur of the nearby temples, yet it remains an essential element of the acropolis’ social and cultural landscape.

Nymphaea: These monumental fountains, often dedicated to nymphs, were an intricate part of the ancient city, providing fresh water to its inhabitants through elaborate aqueduct systems. Their remains echo the sophisticated engineering skills and the appreciation of aesthetic beauty that characterized Hellenistic societies.

The Legend of the Dragon of Rhodes

Amongst the rich tapestry of history and mythology that envelops the island of Rhodes, a particularly thrilling legend stands out, dating back to the 14th century. It was a time when the island was supposedly terrorized by a formidable dragon, lurking within the swampy depths near a path on the hill, ominously named Mal Paso or “Bad Path,” today recognized as Monte Smith.

This path earned its name due to the lurking presence of the dragon, making any passage through it a perilous venture. The creature, described as an enormous beast extending over 20 meters in length, possessed a hide so thick that it was impenetrable to the swords and conventional weapons wielded by the knights of the era.

The dragon’s reign led to widespread fear across Rhodes; children vanished, cattle were mercilessly slaughtered, and knights who dared to confront the beast never returned. Given the mounting casualties, Grand Master Hélion de Villeneuve issued a stark prohibition against further attempts on the dragon’s life, under threat of expulsion from the Order.

Defying this mandate, Knight Dieudonne de Gozon formulated a daring strategy. He returned to his ancestral home in France under the guise of visiting his father’s castle, where he constructed a sizeable replica of the dragon.

This was not a mere model but a training apparatus for him, his two specially trained bloodhounds, and his trusted steed. After arduous preparation, de Gozon returned to Rhodes, determined to remove the threat of the dragon from Mal Paso.

The confrontation was fierce, and despite the initial setbacks – including a forceful blow that dismounted de Gozon and the daunting size of the dragon which prevented the hounds from attacking effectively – de Gozon exploited his knowledge of the dragon’s vulnerability. A decisive thrust of his sword into the dragon’s underbelly ended its tyranny.

This act of valor temporarily placed de Gozon at odds with Grand Master Hélion de Villeneuve, who demanded punishment for disobedience. However, the people of Rhodes rallied in de Gozon’s defense, acknowledging his heroism.

Eventually, the Grand Master relented, recognizing de Gozon’s motives were in the public’s interest, which led to de Gozon ascending to the rank of Grand Master himself between 1346 and 1353.

To dispel any doubts about the beast’s existence, the supposed skull of the dragon was displayed above the d’Amboise Gate at the Medieval Castle, where it was observed until 1837, though many speculated it to be the skull of a crocodile. This display served as a lasting reminder of the legend and de Gozon’s bravery, cementing his legacy within the lore of Rhodes and the Order of Knights.

The Monte Smith area, named after the British Admiral Sir Sidney Smith, who played a crucial role during the Napoleonic Wars, is not only the scenic location of the Acropolis of Rhodes but also a destination that offers visitors a blend of natural beauty and historical significance.

The open area of the Acropolis, devoid of the dense urban sprawl typically associated with ancient Greek acropoleis, presents a unique exploration opportunity.

Unlike other ancient acropoleis enclosed within intimidating fortifications, the Acropolis of Rhodes is open, extending an invitation to wander freely among its historical ruins and green spaces. This openness not only enhances the visual appeal of the site but also encourages a deeper connection with the land’s past.

Guests are encouraged to take their time meandering through the ancient ruins, where each step uncovers a layer of history, and the open skies above mirror the openness of the exploration experience.

This area, with its blend of architectural marvels set against the backdrop of Rhodes’ natural landscapes, serves as a vivid reminder of the intertwined history of human achievement and natural beauty.

Whether you’re visiting alone, attending a seminar, or joining a festival, the Acropolis promises a memorable journey.
Introduction

In the heart of the medieval town of Rhodes, a labyrinth of cobbled alleys promises a step back in time. Within this UNESCO World Heritage site, Socratous Street stands as the epitome of historical charm, luring travelers and history aficionados with its pastel-hued facades and centuries-old architecture.

This thoroughfare traces a narrative of medieval grandeur and modern-day vibrancy, weaving between ancient remnants and contemporary indulgences.

A Glimpse into the Socratous Street Illustrious Past

Socratous Street is not just an address on the island of Rhodes; it is a living chronicle of the town’s enduring history. From its inception, the street has been a bustling thoroughfare, connecting the historic

Avenue of the Knights with the commercial heart of the city. Its name, derived from the philosopher Socrates, reflects the intellectual and cultural significance this space held during the Byzantine era.

Flourishing Under Impressions

In its early days, Socratous Street blossomed as a hub for scholars and craftsmen, a tradition that flourished under the Knights of Saint John’s rule. The knights, representing various European origins, brought with them an amalgamation of architectural styles.

This fusion painted the street with a diverse palette, leaving a legacy of chivalrous structures and intellectual splendour. Monoliths of this era, like the Grand Master’s Palace, are grandiose reminders of the street’s noble past.

Echoes of the Ottoman Empires

The passage of time echoes the hymn of Ottoman conquest, casting a new shade of influence on the street’s identity.

Turkish baths and minaret spires altered the skyline while the negotiation of space within the structures gave birth to hidden courtyards and galleries, shifting the focus from expansive to the intimate—yet marking Socratous Street as a historic meeting point between East and West.

A Story Unfolding in Stone

Strolling along the mosaic of cobbled pathways, visitors are privy to an architectural tapestry that speaks volumes without uttering a word. Every nook and corner conceals a masterpiece of design, each adorned with subtle yet significant intricacies that magnify the grandeur of everyday life in antiquity.

Timeless Arches and Carved Pillars

The classical arches and porticoes—resilient to the test of time—speak of an architectural wisdom that transcends epochs.

The finesse of chiseled stone and sculpted pillars denotes not just structural integrity but an aesthetic sense that envisioned the town’s silhouette with an artist’s eye. These elements, credited to craftsmen of yore, are a testament to the island’s rich artisanal heritage.

A Testament to Diversity

Socratous Street is a microcosm of diverse architectural languages, each a whisper of the influences that once swept through its alleys. Gothic windows share shadows with Islamic latticework, a juxtaposition that harmonises in its contrast.

Each edifice tells a unique tale, be it the towers that once formed part of the city’s ramparts or the humble fountains that once placated the thirst of passersby.

Modern-Day Renaissance

While history shapes the core of Socratous Street, the present breathes life into its stoic walls, infusing a modern vibrancy without diluting its historic essence.

Today, this thoroughfare has transcended mere archeological interest, transforming into a confluence of cultural and commercial activities that cater to the erstwhile sojourner and the contemporary traveler alike.

The Cultural Bazaars

The artisanal spirit that once defined the street’s craftsmanship is rejuvenated through bustling marketplaces and boutique shops. Pottery, textiles, and jewellery echo a pride in the island’s traditional crafts, each item a hand-picked treasure to brighten modern abodes.

The galleries that have sprung forth proudly display the works of local artists, mirroring the creative resonance that still thrives in the community.

A Culinary Expedition

Food is a cultural touchstone, and the street’s culinary offerings are a testament to this philosophy. Local eateries blend ancient recipes with contemporary tastes, offering a gastronomic odyssey that celebrates Rhodian cuisine.

From quaint tavernas to gourmet bistros, the varied panorama of dining establishments caters to the palates of numerous cultures, continue to propagate the legacy of culinary cross-pollination that once the Knights encouraged.

Archaeological Sites Around Socratous Street

Adjacent to the vibrant life of Socratous Street, the remnants of antiquity stand as silent watchers of time. These archaeological sites, mere steps away from the hustle and bustle, offer a profound insight into the historical layers that constitute the town of Rhodes.

One of the most significant sites is the Temple of Venus, believed to date back to the 3rd century BC, showcasing the Hellenistic influences that permeated the island.

Not far off, the Rhodes Archaeological Museum, housed in the Hospital of the Knights, presents artifacts that encapsulate the island’s rich history, from ancient Greece to medieval times.

Another notable landmark is the Synagogue Kahal Shalom, which is the oldest synagogue in Greece, providing visitors with a glimpse into the enduring Jewish heritage of Rhodes. Each site embodies a fragment of the past, inviting explorers to piece together the mosaic of cultures that have thrived on this legendary island.

Conclusion

Socratous Street in Rhodes showcases the island’s rich history and culture. This iconic street intertwines centuries of stories through its architecture, marketplaces, and diverse influences. Visitors can delve into Rhodian heritage, connecting the past and present. It’s a must-visit for uncovering the mystique of the Mediterranean’s historic islands.

Two Greek islands are among the top choices of Swedes for holidays this autumn, according to booking data presented by TUI..

In particular, Rhodes (3rd most popular choice) and Crete (5th) are among the 5 destinations that attract the most bookings for this autumn.

Their top destination is the Canary Islands, followed by Cyprus (2nd) and Mexico (4th).

Meanwhile, according to research conducted by Kantar Media’s Sifopanel on behalf of TUI, via online interviews with a sample of 1,074 people aged 18-79 on 20-23 September 2023, despite the financial pressures on Swedish households, one in two intend to travel abroad in 2024 and one in three in winter.

Also, 18% said they will travel in spring and summer. At the same time, a relatively high percentage (31%) of undecideds about travel in 2024 is found.

The key findings of the survey were:
-Younger age groups are uncertain about future travel, while slightly more families with children say this year that they will not travel at all.

These two groups of travellers are relatively more likely than other Swedes to choose fewer trips or cheaper destinations.

-Only one in five (22%) say they have an increased need for a holiday in autumn or winter due to the heatwave in the summer.

TUI data confirms this trend, recording high levels of bookings for winter, particularly for the upcoming school holidays.

– During the autumn holidays, several departures to, for example, the Canary Islands, are almost full from almost all departure points across the country. Capacity has also been increased with larger aircraft on departures to Mexico to meet high demand. Currently, there are still seats available for Turkey and Rhodes.

Almost 7 out of 10 trips have already been sold on long-haul flights. Mexico in particular is a trend this winter, thanks to direct flights from Stockholm-Arlanda. However, most Swedes will travel over the Christmas holidays to the Canary Islands.

These are the messages coming from the London Tourism Fair, which opened its gates on Monday 6 November 2023, gathering a large number of exhibitors and visitors from all over Europe and the rest of the world.

Our destination is receiving optimistic signals for 2024 and according to estimates, the upcoming tourist season will open on our island, barring any unforeseen event, around March 25, 2024, a week before the Catholic Easter, while it is not yet clear how the holiday program on the island will be implemented for those who left the island in a hurry last July due to the fire.

Asked by Rodia, the president of the Dodecanese Tourist Office Association, Christos Michalakis, who is at the fair, said that from Great Britain things are very positive, something that was already known but now fully confirmed.

“Scheduled airline seats are up and pre-bookings are going very well. From where we have received messages about Rhodes they are very positive. We are optimistic. The messages are very positive and it looks like 2024 will be a good year,” he said.

Of course, everyone at the Report points out that the war in Israel is affecting this market, which is frozen, but they don’t think the 2024 season is in danger. Even in these conditions, Rhodes is a destination that stands out because of the security it provides.

In terms of last minute bookings, these will continue to characterize many markets as well as many tourists as has been the case in recent years.

In any case, the evolution of the situation in the Middle East will also play a role in the next tourist season, which will determine both the opening and the course of the season, as Egypt, with its resorts and its position close to the war zones, is an important factor.

Mr Matsigos
“All surveys show that the British will not cut back on travel. They will travel. Maybe they will cut back on days and they will go all inclusive to control their spending. Another feature is that they will prefer, not high season, because of the weather and because that’s when packages are more expensive.

So the beginning and end of the tourist season will fare better.

Another survey shows that most bookings from Germany and England will be made in January, after the end of the holidays and after “cash” in their finances citizens, “said also in “Rodia” the president of the Association of Hotel Managers Rhodes George Matsigos who is also in London, regarding the trends that exist for travel to Great Britain, our main market.
Also, as he underlines, in general sales so far are doing better than last year and although the numbers are still small, market trends and the forecast of airline seats by most major tour operators indicate an increase.

At the same time, he says, the signals from Germany are a little better than this time last year but that does not mean that the German market will do any better between now and the end of the new season as this year we have seen a decline of around 10%.

In fact, he notes that last year there was a fear of an increase in energy costs and packages were also increased, so Germans preferred nearby destinations and did not book holidays at this time of year.

However, because in the end, there was not such a large increase in energy costs due to the good weather conditions and because people believe that the situation will be the same this year, it is estimated that things will be better.

“So, despite the decrease in arrivals from Germany, we have no decrease in airline seats. We will be at last year’s levels from Germany. As far as France and Italy are concerned we had a decrease but it is too early to talk about these markets as they are closing holidays at the last minute,” added Matsigos, while on the war in Israel he said that everyone hopes that it will not extend in time and locally.

In conclusion, he stressed that Rhodes has always been based on providing quality at an affordable price and that what it seems is that no matter what happens people need to travel. It is something that is now necessary and needed, perhaps for fewer days, but the “thirst” for travel will be there.
